The Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved-shooting that occurred on Bowden Road on March 17, 2026. The details below are preliminary.
The incident resulted in the death of 49-year-old Michael Krause. Krause had a criminal history including Domestic Battery, Driving Under the Influence, Possession of a Controlled Substance Without a Prescription, Petit Theft, and Discharging a Firearm in Public. Had Krause survived his injuries he would have been arrested for multiple counts of Aggravated Assault and one count of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
At 9:16 a.m., Krause entered a convenience store on Bowden Road. Five minutes after he entered the store, Krause pulled out an apparent handgun and pointed it at the store clerk. Krause demanded the clerk call the police, stating he wanted to die and he wanted the police to kill him. The customers inside the store left the store, and the store clerk called for police assistance. While inside the store, Krause made threats to the customers he was going to come out of the store shooting.
Officers arrived to the scene moments after receiving the call and took tactical positions around the store. At 9:30 a.m., Krause exited the store and began moving quickly toward Officer Cascante; Krause had his right arm outstretched in front of his body with his weapon pointed at the officer. Officer Cascante fired his rifle, striking Krause. Krause fell to the ground, his weapon hitting the pavement. Krause died on scene.
The State Attorneyโs Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officerโs actions. JSO will then conduct an internal review to ensure the officer acted within policy. Conclusions remain pending.
