Crimson Earth – Heathen Woman
Dorset’s Crimson Earth were an immediate gut-punch to the local scene in August 1970, quickly moving from rehearsals to rapturously received gigs. By the end of that year they had won a competition to crown the most popular regional band (beating off competition from other local favourites Graveyard), which led to a television appearance and an audition for EMI. The band was comprised of Sam Champ (vocals), Dave Martin (drums) and brothers Dave Wynn (guitar) and Chris Wynn (bass). In 1971 they started working with the Plastic Dog agency from Bristol and toured the country, though mainstream success proved surprisingly elusive, with the band splitting in 1976. Crimson Earth recorded six original tracks on a reel-to-reel tape in 1972 of which ‘Heathen Woman’ is the standout - the classic tale of a relationship gone biblically sour.
