Didn't we just do this? Sort of. Claiming a new beneficial trait is well actually due to a loss of regulation is standard creationist fare. One of the most common targets for such claims is the Cit+ (aerobic citrate metabolism) line of E. coli in the Lenksi Long Term Evolution Experiment. Creationists are quite specific about what they claim explains this trait, and the very specific claim is...completely wrong. And this has significant implications for broader creationist claims.
