March 15th, 2026 is Oscar night — and for the past several years, it’s also been the day I’ve participated in Joel Havers’ “Make a Movie During the Oscars.”
This video is a public service announcement — the first PSA I’ve made since I started uploading to YouTube back in 2007 — and it’s an invitation to create something for this year's Oscars Day, March 15th.
You don’t have to make a feature-length movie.
You don’t even have to make a movie at all.
You can:
Make a short video
Write a song or a story
Fix or repair something
Build or transform something
Try something creative you’ve never done before
What matters is this: start something, finish it, and experience the joy of creation.
Over the years, participating in Make a Movie During the Oscars pushed me to create things I never would have imagined:
A comedy about a dying man whose relative started the Great Depression and World War II
The Devil Goes Down to YouTube, where I played four characters and did everything myself — writing, acting, filming, editing — and had more fun than I’ve ever had on YouTube
A film built almost entirely around audio recordings of a woman documenting her life
A Charmed Life, a short film about riding my bicycle and finding dozens of discarded paintings in a single day
Films about movies I’d like to make — including some wild thought experiments that turned into surprisingly plausible plots
Every one of these projects gave me something priceless:
a deep sense of accomplishment, joy, and satisfaction that comes from finishing something you made.
Creation is human.
Creation is joyful.
Creation gets the old brain working.
So on March 15th, while the Oscars are on, I encourage you to make something instead of just watching something.
