This is a technique I developed using acrylic mediums & paint to achieve ultra realistic road surfaces for model railroads & dioramas. The trick is applying multiple layers, and allowing each one to dry before you put on the next layer including the paint. When it comes to painting with acrylics the trick is to use lot's of water - keep the surface "wet" as you apply the (washes) filters.
Most acrylic mediums and paint which are generally safe and non-toxic.
