Out from his successful art with Nightmareland/Hell Frost and also invaZion/Fragile Immortality (illustrations finished 2010-2011). Chinese artist Kaung Hong was appointed 2012 to do the last and final EP/ALBUM artwork for The Unguided trilogy. And it's of this ambitious project the Fallen Angels/Lust and Loathing artwork was rendered. 4 years before they would even decorate any release!
Fun facts (Potential spoilers ahead if you haven't read the story):
- The different colored eye characters on the left side was originally a fan idea picked up by the band. Indeed a good representation of the different album colors. The three characters Judgment, Defector and Mercy is now a essential part of The Unguided story and is seen again on the "Brotherhood" EP.
- The cocoons in the illustration is representing the final stage of the unguided army before they hatched into dark angels seen on the "Brotherhood" EP. Throughout the three EP's released you've been following their evolution, which could be a symbolic assumption of a growing fan base to the band.
- On the right side you witness Syndissiah's fall, a victory enabled only by the joint action of the King and the Queen, as touched upon in Operation: E.A.E and Hate (And Other Triumphs).
- The hammer is called "Heaven's Bane".
- Syndissiah is loosely based on the robotic character at Sonic Syndicate's album "Love and Other Disasters". There it's seen replacing a heart with a cog. In this illustration the cog is effectively removed (and shortly thereafter destroyed in the story).
- This is the first illustration of the King post the event of the Betrayer ripping his wings off.
- The Queen; Eve, is based on the character seen on the Sonic Syndicate album "Eden Fire" and she's described in the song "Black Eyed Angel". The first verse of the song actually hands on describe the artwork of said album from 2005.
Here's a series of pictures following the progress from original sketch to final illustration. Mr. Hong does most of his work in Photoshop and we are very blessed to have such talented friend as an asset in the band.
