How was the new-right formed? During the 1970s, anti-feminists, anti-communists, anti-abortionists, racists, and those advocating for prayer in schools, in addition to a core group of once-apolitical evangelicals, would come to be known as the "New Right". It’s hard to believe that just a few years prior some of these groups had no connection to each other, or an urge to vote. After all, one survey found that roughly 70% of the 35-60 million people who identified as born-again did not vote in 1976. But suddenly, this coalition was primed and ready to take part in politics. How did it happen? Growth— and some powerfully invested people (Scaife, Koch, Coors, etc) pulling the strings. In this episode, I discuss how the decade became the debutante ball— or coming out— of the New Right. This is the full 40-minute episode.
