Our pipeline got a huge boost earlier this year when the folks at Epic gave us (and everybody else!) early access to the MetaHuman toolset.
Of course MetaHuman is only the first step in actually bringing the characters into the game, but it gives us a giant head start by allowing us to play with things like facial features, teeth, eyes, and skin complexion before we pull the characters into the engine and begin using them to create things like walk cycles, put words in their mouth, interactions with their environment, and the players, etc.
Being able to convey big expressions (laughing, sobbing, rage) is great, but it’s the ability to also capture truly subtle facial expressions- the raised eyebrow, or the slight downturn of the mouth- that take a character from good to great!
