Does stress affect productivity? Creating a mindset for change can really help if you’re the kind of person who stresses themselves out worrying about stress. It can be hard to know where to start, though.
Learning how to swim is a great metaphor for this life lesson. I mean, swimming is difficult. It’s hard on your muscles, and you have to coordinate all parts of your body so that they do the right thing at the right time. To top it off, you’re in a hostile medium that will kill you if you let it.
That’s a lot of stress, right?
When I tried to swim, I’d tense up whenever felt myself starting to sink. Of course, that just made me sink more. It was a vicious cycle that took all the joy out of swimming for me. So I asked a friend, who’s a swim coach, for advice – maybe I should position my arms or legs differently or something.
He said, “The first thing you need to do is relax.”
That’s the first step towards creating a mindset for change. The more you tense up, the more you flail about and the more mistakes you make, in swimming and in life. Stress, especially chronic stress, impacts your job performance in the same way. You just sink faster. Does stress affect productivity? Do you even need to ask?
