Lander County lawmen were baffled when in the span of a few years there were seven incidents when unknown perpetrators carved up cattle on a ranch near Battle Mountain without leaving tracks. Such mysterious cases, in which eyes, ears and tongues have been taken while the beef is left behind, have occurred in Nevada since the 1970s and have also been reported in Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.
