COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. The virus is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes droplets that are inhaled by another individual. There is also the possibility that the virus can be spread through contact with a surface that has the virus on it. You should therefore avoid contact with your mouth, nose, and eyes. Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, tiredness, aches, a sore throat, and shortness of breath. Severe complications such as pneumonia or multiple-organ failure can occur. Those most at risk of severe complications include the elderly and individuals with additional medical conditions such as: high blood pressure, diabetes, lung disease, heart conditions, or a compromised immune system. In order to protect ourselves and others, we should wash our hands frequently with soap and water, stay at home, wear a mask if you do go out in public, and practice social distancing.
