Two decades before social media “cancellation” was a thing, Courtney Love was already burning bridges in real time – onstage, backstage, and in the press – leaving a trail of bruised faces, furious bands, and legendary feuds in her wake. From a chaotic July afternoon at Lollapalooza to late‑night phone rants and a co‑headline tour that imploded after just nine shows, this is how one rock star’s grief, ambition, and obsession with “credibility” turned into some of the messiest beefs of the 90s.
Our first story begins in 1995 at the traveling Lollapalooza tour. That year’s lineup included Hole, Sonic Youth, Beck, Pavement, and Cypress Hill. Nirvana had been set to headline the 1994 edition, but Kurt Cobain’s death put an end to that. The 1995 run kicked off at The Gorge in Washington. Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill wasn’t performing; she was backstage as a guest of Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.
Gordon had produced Hole’s debut, Pretty on the Inside, and in her memoir Girl in a Band, she called Love “manipulative” and admitted she always kept some emotional distance, knowing Courtney could suddenly turn on her. She pulled Hanna aside and warned her to be careful, suggesting Love might be looking for a dust‑up.
Hanna and Love had never met, but there was tension. Years earlier, after a drunken day with Cobain, Hanna had scrawled “Kurt smells like Teen Spirit” on his wall, inadvertently naming a generation‑defining anthem. She was an early fan of Hole’s first single “Retard Girl,” and Love had even offered to help Bikini Kill land a major‑label deal, which they politely declined to stay independent.
Add to this Courtney’s emotional state: still dealing with Cobain’s death just over a year earlier and the loss of Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff. She was not in a calm place. Spin Magazine ran online tour diaries, including one by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who described everyone as disgusted and bummed. Behind the scenes, people remembered Courtney swinging between charisma and confrontation. Moore later said that at a Vancouver stop, Love bragged about wearing a cast because she’d “punched some [expletive] in the face.” The person she meant was Kathleen Hanna.
The basic story: Love and Hanna crossed paths backstage, things got heated, and it turned physical. Some accounts say Courtney flicked a cigarette at Hanna, threw candy, then punched her; others say it was more of a slap or shove amid lots of yelling. Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur would later claim it wasn’t a full‑on punch, just chaos blown out of proportion, but the legend stuck.
Hanna later wrote that Courtney, flanked by two large guys and seemingly wasted, got in her face, hissed like a cat, and traced her features with a lit cigarette like she might put it out on her. Kathleen took it seriously enough to press charges. Courtney pleaded guilty to assault, receiving a suspended sentence, a fine, and anger management. For the press, it was gold: two fierce women in rock, already framed as opposites, now literally coming to blows at the decade’s biggest alt‑rock festival.
