Did you know there's an intriguing (or infuriating?) exception in French grammar involving countries and the phrase “venir de”?
It’s a subtle rule that even seasoned learners might miss (like me until last year)!
🚺 Feminine Countries: When referring to a feminine country, we don’t use the article “la”, so “venir de” or “venir d’“ + country. Say, "Elle vient de France" or "Elle vient d’Angleterre".
🚹 Masculine & plural countries: Here’s the twist! If the country is masculine or plural, we have to blend “de” with the article to form “du” or “des”. For example, "Il vient du Portugal" or "Je viens des Philippines".
Why this rule? Well, it's one of those “just because” in French!
