What happens when you lose your weapon but the fight doesn't stop?

A few years ago, one of us lost his weapon during a sparring match. We didn't stop - we just kept fighting with whatever was left.

So we decided to recreate the idea:
One fighter has only a shield. The other has an axe.

The goal isn't just to survive. It's to win.

This was a sparring scenario built around a simple question: how much can you actually do with a shield when your opponent still has a weapon?
