Today we take a deeper look at the Saronic Corsair USV in Sea Power and explore three advanced tactical roles beyond simple one-way naval drones.
In this episode we test whether autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) can become force multipliers in modern naval warfare by performing missions that would otherwise put manned warships at risk.
We explore:
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Arm Corsair USVs with lightweight Mk48 ASW torpedoes and use sonar data from a mothership to hunt enemy submarines.
Over-the-Horizon Targeting: Equip USVs with modern radar, ELINT sensors, and two-way datalinks to locate enemy ships and relay targeting data back to a human-crewed vessel, allowing long-range Tomahawk missile strikes.
Electronic Warfare & Missile Decoys: Fit USVs with radar reflectors and electromagnetic emitters that imitate their mothership's radar signature to see if they can successfully lure away incoming radar-guided anti-ship missiles.
