One of the curious aspects of hypothesis testing is that you can choose a one-sided or two-sided rejection region. This has broad implications. For example, we may want to design a clinical study to see if tobacco is unhealthy, which is a one-sided test. But if we entertain the chance that it may be good for you, we must develop a two-sided test, which has different rejection criteria.
