What have Jewish rabbis throughout history said about Jesus, and why do Orthodox Jews firmly believe he could not be the Messiah?
Recently, we had a candid and thought-provoking conversation with an Orthodox Jew about one of the most important questions in Jewish thought: Who is the Messiah?
We obviously believe that Jesus (Yeshua) is the promised Messiah, and the man we were speaking with definitely believes otherwise, drawing his understanding from the perspectives and teachings of Jewish rabbis throughout history to explain why he does not believe Jesus could be the Messiah.
At one point, he even said, “I’ll ask my rabbi when the Messiah comes.”
But we didn't stop simply to debate. We came to listen, ask questions, explore Jewish history and tradition, and better understand WHY we believe what we believe.
So what does it look like when Jewish people who hold fundamentally different views about Jesus talk to each other and genuinely listen to one another?
The result was a robust, honest, and deeply meaningful conversation about Scripture, Jewish tradition, the Messiah, and the identity of Jesus.
