Water scarcity is becoming one of the biggest engineering challenges of the 21st century. But what if the solution wasn’t building bigger desalination plants… but moving them deep underwater?
Traditional desalination requires enormous amounts of energy to force seawater through reverse osmosis membranes, creating high costs and massive brine pollution problems. Despite decades of innovation, the process is still expensive, energy intensive, and environmentally controversial.
Now, a company called OceanWell believes the ocean itself may hold the answer. By placing desalination systems nearly 1,000 feet underwater, they aim to use natural ocean pressure to do much of the pumping for free — potentially reducing energy use, lowering infrastructure costs, and minimizing environmental impact.
