Today we take a real-world military scenario and push it to the extreme in DCS World: can US A-10 Warthogs protect an Ohio-class nuclear submarine while it transits the dangerous Strait of Hormuz on the surface?
The scenario begins with USS Ohio suffering a sensor fault while exiting the Persian Gulf. Remaining submerged through the Strait of Hormuz is considered too risky, forcing the nuclear submarine to transit on the surface in broad daylight.
A nearby flight of A-10 Warthogs is diverted and re-tasked to provide low-level air cover for the stricken submarine. Meanwhile, F-16 Fighting Falcons operating in the Persian Gulf are assigned high cover, while ISR drones already monitoring the strait are re-purposed to provide additional surveillance and targeting support.
But can this improvised US military defence protect USS Ohio from a coordinated attack involving Iranian drones, unmanned surface vessels (USVs), attack boats and other threats?
