"Cotton Ghosts and Button Knots"
Same holler, same red clay bend
Same thin quilts folded thin again
Twelve names breathing one small room
Lantern light and a borrowed broom
When someone left, they didn’t leave much
Just a Sunday sleeve, a collar’s touch
Mama took scissors, careful, slow
A square of love from what they wore
Chorus
We kept them close in a cardboard box
Cotton ghosts and button knots
If you held them up and closed your eyes
You could see their hands, you could smell their lives
Verse 2
No rooms to save the way they stood
No doors to close for remembering good
So a pocket, a cuff, a faded hem
Had to stand in for all of them
Lavender soap, old wood smoke
Sweat and rain and a joke they told
That box was church, was grave, was proof
That love stays warm even hand to mouth
Chorus
We kept them close in a cardboard box
Cotton ghosts and button knots
If you held them up and closed your eyes
You could see their hands, you could smell their lives
Verse 3
One winter morning the box was gone
Just an empty space the size of wrong
Whispers flew like startled birds
Some said theft, some said nerves
Some asked how’d this happen and by who
The bible’s in us all through and through
But weeks later at school one day
There stood a coat that took your breath away
Verse 4
Red from Aunt Mae, gray from Joe
Baby blue from long ago
Every stitch a borrowed goodbye
Every seam a lullaby
Dolly smiled like she’d struck gold
Wore the past to fight the cold
She walked proud, she walked tall
Smelled like every funeral
Chorus
She kept them close in a walking prayer
Sleeves of loss everywhere
All that was gone was sewn in tight
Bright as sin in the schoolyard light
Verse 5
But one girl stood with her hands in fists
Those scraps were all she’d ever kissed
No coat for her, no shining claim
Just the quiet weight of names
What was holy to keep alive
Was paraded, stitched, and dyed
And grief don’t match in patchwork rows
When it’s all you had and now it shows
Verse 6
She ran down past the sycamore
Where the creek talks low to the shore
Cried till the water learned her name
Let it take what couldn’t stay the same
They searched the bends, they searched the reeds
Found only cloth caught in weeds
A thread, a square, a hint of blue
And the smell of someone she once knew
Final Chorus
Some folks wear their dead like a crown
Some folks lay them gently down
Some losses shine, some disappear
Some are sewn, some are never here
Outro
The coat still hangs in memory
Bright with borrowed history
And the creek keeps what it was given
While the box of scraps walks the living

[verse]
Some people like watching a washer or dryer spin around
Mesmerized by the motion, by the rhythm, by the sound
The first time I saw a row of people staring like that
I thought there was a strange cult at my local laundromat
I never knew about this phenomenon as a child
Back then I just threw my dirty clothes in a pile
My mom would eventually put them in a top loader
Then hang them on a clothesline when the cycle was over
[chorus]
My therapist said I need to limit my screen time
Cuz doomscrolling hasn’t been that good for the sanity of my mind
But where I live there aren’t a lot of wide open spaces
I live in a city and not one of those prairie places
Some people like to go and look at a body of water
It brings them peace and a sense of inner order
But the only water near me is my neighbor’s kiddie pool
I don’t think staring at that from my bedroom window would be cool
[verse]
So I think I’m gonna join the group at the laundromat
I think that’s where I’ll find nirvana at
I’ll start the process even if I only have one shirt to clean
And look through the window as if it were a tv screen
Some folks say I’d be better if I turned off electronics and read a book
They say at the words on the page are a better place to look
But I’m cutting screen time to turn off thoughts and drama
And reading a book, it doesn’t help that problem
[bridge]
I call it soap opera if clothes spin when music plays
I call it adult entertainment if someone is washing lingerie
I call it the sports channel if someone’s washing uniforms or jerseys
Bump the temp up to hot if your clothes are really dirty
I call it a medical program if someone’s washing scrubs
I like when someone uses too much soap so there are extra suds
I hate the sound when someone puts shoes in the dryer
Don’t put a bra in there, it’ll wreck the underwire
[outro]
I’ve switched off the phone. My front screen is clear
I don’t seem to need it while I’m standing here
Wash rinse spin tumble dry I’ll be back again
Cause the laundromat’s the place where my mind can mend
[outro - chant]
Spin it, spin it, let it roll
Washin’ my mind, cleanin’ my soul
Spinnin my soul
Spin it, spin it, let it roll
Washin’ my mind, cleanin’ my soul
