After completing the new concrete pour as part of our patio makeover, we decided we would like some sort of shade structure. We looked at a few options and decided on a kit from COSTCO. One of the things we liked about this kit is the fact that it has a retractable canopy since we didn’t necessarily always want our main patio area to be shaded.
The model we decided on is the COSTCO 12’ x 20’ Paragon Outdoor Pergola.
Assembly of the kit was a multi-day project for us since weather and other scheduling issues were vying for our time.
It is recommended to have at least three people for many of the steps which we found essential for ease of assembly.
This model arrives packaged in four boxes. Some very heavy!
Unpacking: Find the box with assembly instructions and read over the entire document before beginning.
Compare the contents of the four cartons to the full parts list. If any parts are missing a phone number is provided to call for replacements.
As you unpack the pieces it’s a good idea to lay them out in separate staging areas. Each part is labeled and can be referenced on the parts list.
Location: Select the location for the pergola. In our case, we are installing on an existing concrete patio.

Tape Measure
Work Gloves
Safety Goggles
Philips Screwdriver
Level
2 small ladders
Wooden Mallet
Scissors
Liquid Soap or WD40 Lubricant
Hey Key (Included)
3/8” masonry drill bit to drill holes if installing on concrete
NOTE: Cordless screwdriver or drill with Phillips head bit and # 5/32nd Hex Driver Bit is highly recommended but not required.

We found a few damaged parts when unpacking but we were able to straighten the parts that we found that had been bent or crushed in shipping. The kit also includes a small tube of touch-up paint which comes in handy. Many of the parts were packed inside the other parts as we opened the packages.
We also used a small tray to hold all the assembly bolts, washers, etc. for ease of identification.
Since we had plenty of room, we fully assembled the pergola and then adjusted it by moving it to the desired location and then secured it to the concrete slab. Initially, we were not exactly sure of the placement on our patio and this allowed us to adjust its location slightly.
During the time that it was not anchored down yet, we used several five-gallon buckets filled with rocks and tied the pergola down at each end for safety since it was August in Texas and thunderstorms were imminent.
