This beautiful armored catfish comes from the Rio das Mortes drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil, and was described by Nijssen & Isbrücker in 1971. Its name “maculifer” refers to its dotted pattern – a perfect match for this elegant little bottom dweller.
Unlike many short-snouted Corydoras, C. maculifer has a longer snout, which it uses to search through fine sand for tiny food particles. Adults stay relatively small, around 5–6 cm, and should be kept in peaceful groups on soft substrate with clean, oxygen-rich water.
