SnappyDragon | Corsets + Chronic Pain : Drafting and fitting an asymmetrical Victorian corset pattern @SnappyDragon | Uploaded July 2020 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Well-made corsets shouldn't hurt to wear, but what if you have chronic pain? I set out to draft a sewing pattern for a Victorian corset that would work with my scoliosis (curved spine) and fibromyalgia (pressure-sensitive chronic muscle pain). Follow me through the process of analyzing the pain I had in a bought corset (0:36), measuring and preparing (4:46), testing a rough mock-up (5:45), drafting and tracing the pattern (9:49), constructing a wearable mockup (13:08), and how the testing turned out (21:10). Drafting and fitting a corset using these methods will not make an asymmetrical figure appear symmetrical, but it will put you on the path to having a comfortable and supportive corset which you can then pad out (or not) to your liking. This process may also be useful for symmetrical figures with other medical concerns who need a more carefully customized fit or shape than bought patterns and corsets provide.
When directed, you can skip to 18:02 to avoid one instance of loud power tool noise.
Also, my channel is taking part in CoCo-Vid, a CosTube-wide online conference July 30th-August 2nd 2020. I'll be hosting a panel and Q&A on disability and health issues in the costuming world, and a live demo of 18th Century Pleating Math. Subscribe to make sure you don't miss them!
