The Iranian city of Qum, which is located some 150 km south of Tehran, is now one of the most important politico-religious centres for whole Shi’ite world, it is the Vatican of Shi’ism, its bastion in which their largest religious seminaries (‘Hawzat al-‘Ilmiyyah’, the scientific Hawzahs) are based. The Shia claim that the sister of Imam al-Rida (rh) is buried there, they even refer to Qum as ‘Qum al-Muqaddasah (‘the holy Qum’!). In February 2020, Qum became the epicentre of the Coronavirus in the entire middle east. Many tomb and shrine visitors from Arab countries like Bahrain and Kuwait and even Pakistan have reportedly brought the virus to their respective countries after visiting Qum in Iran.

Today in Iran, the clergy continue to encourage the Shia to visit the shrines as they simply believe that the shrines are protected by the corpse dwelling in the shrine.
