The work of photographer Corky Lee is on display through August 2024 at the John Hope Franklin Center, where the exhibition was opened Friday, April 12.
For over 50 years, Lee photographed the daily life of Asian Americans and documented how they fought for social justice. At the opening, Calvin Cheung-Miaw introduced the gallery, and Columbia historian Mae Ngai shared her insights into the life and work of Lee, the "undisputed, unofficial Asian American photographer laureate.” In conversation with Duke professor Eileen Chow, Ngai explained that Lee was both a product of and a witness to the momentous changes in Asian American communities in the United States, from the birth of the Asian American movement in the 1970s to the stop-AAPI hate resistance during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Duke University - John Hope Franklin Center is open daily from 9-5 to all members of the Duke community with a valid ID card. Members of the public can contact the Franklin Center staff to schedule a time to view the exhibition.
