"OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputy has resigned after an officer-involved shooting last year, according to officials.
On Nov. 12, 2023, authorities say they responded to McLaren Circle around 8:42 a.m. because of a call about a car driving around, honking its horn, and disrupting the peace since 3 a.m.
Meanwhile, another call had come in from a woman telling investigators her boyfriend, Marquis Jackson had allegedly committed grand theft auto and was threatening her through texts and phone calls.
The victim reportedly showed deputies pictures of a firearm suppressor in her car. Officials say Jackson came to the scene around 9:09 a.m. and was taken into custody, searched, handcuffed, and put in the backseat of Deputy Jesse Hernandez’s patrol vehicle while the investigation continued.
The victim then said Jackson had a silencer and she wasn’t sure where it was, but that he had more than one weapon.
While the investigation continued, other deputies reportedly found the victim’s car on Hunt Club Street.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Hernandez was approaching the rear door of the car to do another search of Jackson when he heard a “pop” sound that he perceived as a gunshot and thought he had been hit, yelling “shots fired” multiple times, rolling to the ground and firing into the patrol car.
Sergeant Beth Roberts said she witnessed Hernandez’s response and shot toward the car as well in response.
Jackson reportedly escaped injury and no gun was found. Deputies say body cam footage and witnesses attested to the fact they did hear a sound that could have been a muffled gunshot.
Hernandez resigned on Dec. 4 after an investigation determined his use of force was not objectively reasonable, whereas Roberts was exonerated after an investigation."
