On July 20, 2024. A Deputy from the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office was on patrol when he saw a driver (Joseph) he recognized to have an active warrant for his arrest. When the deputy activated his emergency lights, the vehicle accelerated and began fleeing before Joseph pulled over after a short pursuit. Joseph left his truck in drive while stepping out, causing him to fall over. The female passenger (Melissa) was able to climb in the driver's seat and put it in park. The deputy exited his squad car and told Joseph several times to get on the ground. Joseph eventually got down on his knees. He was told to lie down on his stomach but attempted to light a cigarette before he complied and laid down. The deputy then instructed the passenger who was now in the driver's seat of the vehicle to exit, she was detained in handcuffs and placed into a squad car. Joseph was told to put his arms out to his sides like an airplane and was also placed in handcuffs. Ems was called as Joseph had scratches on his arm from falling. Joseph stated he "jumped out" because he did not want Melissa involved and admitted to being the driver. A search of Joseph's person revealed a multicolored switchblade style knife. He was questioned on if the truck had run him over and he stated it did not. Numerous items of contraband were located inside of the vehicle. A large purple rubber hose attached to a glass bubble pipe with white crystal residue inside, a plastic baggie with a white crystal residue were located in a backpack along with female type hygiene and makeup products. Also located in the truck was a broken glass pipe with burnt white residue, a homemade tin foil pipe, and two hypodermic needles. Joseph was evaluated by EMS but was not taken to the hospital. A records check of the truck showed that it was registered to Melissa. Joseph initially stated that the plastic bag inside the vehicle was his and said that none of the other bags were his. When told that Melissa was also going to jail, Joseph said that he would take ownership of the drugs in the car. The deputy told him that he already stated the bags were not his. Melissa was informed that she was under arrest and read her Miranda rights. She stated when they were going by the laundromat Joseph saw a sheriff’s car and started acting weird. Melissa stated Joseph jumped out and didn't even put the car in park.She was asked if she saw the flashing lights and sirens which she stated she did not. When questioned about the bag with the female products and contraband, she stated she did not know what the deputy was talking about. When asked how often she was using, Melissa stated she was using daily. She stated both Joseph and her used earlier in the morning. Joseph was transported to the Burnett County Jail, and Melissa was transported to the Grantsburg Police Department for booking.cThe driver Joseph was found guilty for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer. He was sentenced to 1 year in prison, 18 months of extended supervision, and ordered to pay a $750 fine. The female passenger Melissa was found guilty for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and ordered to pay a $750 fine.
