Copper and Magnet interact according to Lenz Law (Copper Engine - This is what I decided to call it).
-If an induced current flows, its direction is always such that it will oppose the change which produced it.
In other words, the magnet is creating an electrical field induced in the copper which in turn, creates a magnetic field that opposes the magnet, which causes it to slow down its decent.
