For diagnostic purposes, this is a 2003 Chevrolet Impala 3400 3.4L with what appears to be a coolant leak.
REPAIR UPDATE #1: The mechanic swore the water pump was the culprit. He replaced, I paid the bill, and I haven't had to add water since ... and it's been a few weeks.
REPAIR UPDATE #2: Well, I'm back in the shop and they tell me now it's the intake and the repair bill is $685 for an all-day job this time.
