Convection Current and the Potassium Permanganate Experiment
Convection Current: Convection current refers to the movement of a fluid, either liquid or gas, caused by the variation in its temperature. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while the cooler, denser fluid sinks. This creates a circular motion known as a convection current.
Experiment with Potassium Permanganate and Beaker: To demonstrate convection currents in a beaker of liquid, you can perform an experiment using a beaker, water, potassium permanganate crystals, and a heat source such as a Bunsen burner.
Setup:
Fill the beaker with water.
Carefully drop individual crystals of potassium permanganate into the water, ensuring they do not color the water unduly. This can be done by using a glass tube to guide the crystals into the beaker.
Place the beaker on a heatproof mat or tripod.
Observation:
Gently heat the base of the beaker below where the crystals have fallen using a Bunsen burner.
As the water is heated, observe the motion of the colored water. The heated water will rise on one side, move across the top, and then fall down the other side of the beaker, demonstrating a convection current.
This experiment visually illustrates the concept of convection currents by showing the movement of the colored water in response to the temperature variation caused by the heat source
