Horse markets have a long tradition in Romania. However, the trade in horses is heavily regulated – to protect against diseases and epidemics. The strict official requirements are almost impossible for traders to comply with. Yet in rural areas, horses are indispensable as working animals. And so the trade continues unofficially at so-called ‘horse exhibitions’.
