“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
Today in our study of the fruit of the Spirit, we come to the fruit of meekness.
What is meekness?
In our text meekness is the Greek word πραότης and it means gentleness, mildness, humility, indulgence toward the weak and erring, patient suffering of injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge. It is sensitivity of disposition and kindness of behavior, founded on strength and prompted by love, an even balance of all tempers and passions. It is CONTROLLED STRENGTH. The person who is meek is polite, restrained and compassionate toward others. This fruit should be evident in the person in whom the Holy Spirit dwells.
Some people think of meekness as weakness, but this is not the case at all. A. W. Tozer once wrote, “The meek man is not a human mouse afflicted with a sense of his own inferiority. Rather, he may be in his moral life as bold as a lion and as strong as Samson; but he has stopped being fooled about himself. He has accepted God’s estimate of his own life. He knows he is as weak and helpless as God declared him to be, but paradoxically, he also knows at the same time that he is in the sight of God of more importance than angels. In himself, nothing — in God, everything. That is his motto.”
