Heres a change! Instead of talking about and showing games, I decided to show you a pet project of mine from the last week. I have a confession: I love video game music! One of the greatest game music musicians of the 90s that went underappreciated in the US was Chris Huelsbeck. He did music back then for a load of C64 and Amiga games before moving on to other platforms. Some of his most amazing work was in the Amiga version of Turrican II.
Turrican II was ported by the Code Monkeys to the Sega Genesis for Accolade and their Ballistic label. The music was... not great. It was a hair better than their port of the first Turrican on the Genesis but still pretty weak over all. I always wished I could have heard a good rendition of one of my favorite Turrican II songs, The Great Bath, on a real Sega Genesis.
I got a serious case of the I wanna do that!s about a week ago. In the past Id only sequenced midi music using a musical keyboard connected to a computer and playing the songs and recording what I played in real time. And the last time I did that was close to 20 years ago. To make real Genesis music, Id have to learn how to use a tracker and find one that fully emulated the Genesis sound hardware so I could create music that would in fact work on a real Sega Genesis.
So, I buckled down and decided to do this thing. I downloaded Deflemask. I watched a few YouTube tutorials on it. I experimented on my own a TON with creating different sounds and learning timing. I read the manual. I scoured the Deflemask forums to learn how to do things like stereo panning and setting a loop point. Then I spent hours listening to the Amiga version of The Great Bath and painstakingly recreating it to the best of my ability using only my computer keyboard and mouse.
Yeah, I know the timing is off and I probably got some notes wrong. And yes, I added some very tiny, very subtle embellishments which I normally wouldnt do, but I thought, hey, Ive got all these sound channels, why not? Im pretty happy with the result even though I know it can be better.
I would appreciate feedback, especially from anyone experienced in making Genesis music. I had fun doing this, it was interesting to learn and get results out of this attempt and Ill definitely do some more. I would estimate I spent about 15 hours both learning to use Deflemask and then creating this song.

Even though its still a ways off,Ive noticed people feel very strongly either pro or anti Amico. Im neutral on it, personally. As a lifelong gamer, obviously I have an interest in it but I also have my doubts and tried to approach this interview as fairly as possible. So if youre either super pro or super anti-Amico youll probably be upset by that.
I think the premise is interesting and the idea has potential, but launching new game platforms is incredibly tough. I didnt have time to get to all the questions I wanted to ask including some good ones that I havent ever seen asked before, so hopefully next time!
