Democratic socialism is making gains this election cycle in the United States. Nowhere is this more evident than in New York City, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani has built his early agenda around rent freezes, city-run grocery stories, and universal child care. In his latest essay, "The 'Consumer Socialism' Trap," Idrees Kahloon, a staff writer at The Atlantic, examines what he calls a new form of socialism focused on lowering the cost of living. Kahloon spoke with Michel Martin about how these ideas are resonating with voters, and why he's not convinced they can deliver on their promise.
