In June 2025, Dr. Fried-Oken spoke at the 11th International Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Meeting in Banff, Canada, urging that BCIs must be designed and evaluated with end-user involvement.
Her presentation included four interviews with people who rely on assistive technology for communication, who shared about their experience and opinions regarding research and development involving users. Interviewees were members of the AAC Peer Support Project Consortium: Alyssa Zisk, Bob Williams, endever* corbin, and Patrick Regan.
Together, they lay the foundation for collaborative, iterative development that is driven by the values of augmentative & alternative communication (AAC), user-centered design, and participatory action research.
