Have you decided to shortcut the publication process by doing it yourself? Have you put so much effort into creating an e-book for KDP that you'd forgotten all about the paperback format (or the many readers who still prefer paperbacks)? In your moment of clarity, did you authorize Amazon to convert your e-book file into a paperback, just to end up with a mediocre product (although I'm sure the writing is great!!!)?

I've never allowed KDP to produce a paperback from my e-book files, but I have nevertheless independently created paperbacks that could've been better. This video highlights the differences between a paperback I created in 2015 and its 2021 revision, the differences between using Microsoft Word and a specialized layout program like Affinity Publisher to design the interior, and comparing a book cover designed in RGB format to one designed in CYMK.

Note: This video does NOT show you HOW to design a paperback. It merely lists the considerations you may want to make when preparing a simple paperback novel, including which programs to use. That said, I still recommend the following products and instructional materials to help you make your own:

Affinity Publisher

Affinity Publisher Workbook

I also recommend getting Affinity's other programs, Photo and Designer, to complete the Studio Link feature that Publisher has available, especially if your book requires graphics of any kind. These programs also allow you to save images in CMYK format, which not all budget software allows (like Paint Shop Pro, for example).

If you insist on designing your book in Microsoft Word (something no one ever really recommends), then check out my article on "The Art of Hyphenation":

Finally, if you want to design your book to a professional standard, I recommend Joel Friedlander's "The Book Blueprint." as your guide:

For a complete list of PROs and CONs for using these software tools to develop your book, along with Scrivener, PaintShop Pro, Adobe InDesign and more, then check out the companion article here:
