It’s Whio Awareness Month – the perfect time to shine a light on these incredible endemic ducks!
Rarer than some species of kiwi, whio (blue duck) are nationally vulnerable with a wild population of less than 3,000 individuals. That’s why Auckland Zoo is part of a dedicated breed for release programme with our conservation partners at the Department of Conservation to boost the numbers of this iconic species in the wild.
