The Endangered Wildlife Trusts (EWT) Birds of Prey Programme have recently returned from an important conservation adventure that took them along 1750 km of powerlines that traverse the vast arid Karoo. Here the team put their Alu-Cab equipment to the ultimate test as they endured rugged terrains and spent extended nights out in the cold, unforgiving, Karoo.

Why powerlines and why the Karoo?

Here, over the last three years, the EWT has been closely monitoring and investigating a unique population of Martial Eagles that nest and breed on the large pylons that support powerlines running like electric veins through this arid heartland, linking our major cities. The programme also managed to fit its 19th eagle with a GPS tracking device, in its pursuit to understand their spatial ecology, survival and threats within this landscape. This work is vital to improve our understanding and enhance the conservation we action for this globally Endangered species.

"For nearly two weeks we travelled and lived out of our vehicle, which becomes our home away from home and mobile office while on assignment in these far-flung locations. With our vehicle fitted with this incredible Alu-Cab equipment, we can stay out in the field longer and reach areas we haven't been able to station ourselves before - all vital so we can study and protect these highly threatened eagles more effectively"

"With an estimated 800 mature Martial Eagles left in South Africa, it's up to all of us to keep Africa's largest eagle sailing through our skies, and the support from Alu-Cab takes us one step closer to achieving this."
