Directly after WWII, historians on either side of the following Cold War generally agreed on the trajectory that their nation was taking. It conformed to the whiggish interpretation in the West, as in a unified nation headed toward greater equality and freedom, and the Marxist interpretation in the East, as in proletarian socialism headed toward communism. Western historians formed a consensus. For contemporary history, this formed the orthodoxy of contemporary history - seeing their nation-state as the triumphant end-point of history only needing moderate improvements and massive defense from foreign aggression.
