The citadel, dating back to the times of Alexander the Great, has undergone extensive restoration with support from the international community and now houses Herat National Museum which was opened to the public in 2011.
"This shows that the Afghan nation has a great past, and I think it shows also that the Afghan nation has an enormous potential," says Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann, NATO's Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, having visited the Qala Ikhtyaruddin in Herat.
