Congress Pool
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano (northwestern Wyoming, USA).
Congress Pool is located west of Nuphar Lake in the southern Porcelain Basin of Yellowstone’s Norris Geyser Basin. It has a funnel-shaped, subcircular basin about 16 to 17 meters across. The feature first appeared in the late 1870s. Its appearance and activity of Congress Pool has varied considerably. It’s been a fumarole, a bluish or greenish or muddy hot spring, a mudpot, a geyser with episodic eruptions, and a ~perpetual spouter. The August 2023 clips seen here show Congress Pool engaged in vigorous churning of muddy water. The churning energy alternated from high to low to almost calm.
In 2005, researchers measured the temperature of Congress Pool’s water at 71 degrees Celsius, with a pH of about 6 (= slightly acidic).
