After my last couple of videos about this trail crossing in Cheshire, CT, I returned again to watch the intersection operate and see how different transportation users respond to the HAWK beacon and hazardous chicane gates. I found that compliance with the HAWK among everyone was poor, which is a clear sign that the design of this crossing is problematic, and that the chicane gates still do not do anything to increase safety and should be removed.
The Town of Cheshire and CTDOT (as it’s a state road) need to recognize that the HAWK is not the right solution here, acknowledge their mistake and cut their losses, and either make this a safer unsignalized crossing or install a normal traffic signal as I proposed in my previous video.
