On Monday, 2nd December 2024, UAR hosted the 11th annual Openness Awards and 87th Stephen Paget Memorial Lecture at the Francis Crick Institute in London.
The inaugural Professor Sir Colin Blakemore Memorial Award was presented by Sally Robinson, AWERB Chair at Cancer Research UK’s Manchester Institute and the University of Bristol, to Professor Emma Robinson. At a time when the use of animals at Bristol University was under scrutiny following campaign activity, Emma was adamant that being open had never been more important and so gave a high-profile evening lecture at the Bristol Neuroscience Festival, where she engaged with the public as she talked about the use of animals in research aiming to understand and treat mental health disorders.
The first Openness award was presented by Professor Robin Lovell-Badge, head of the Laboratory of Stem Cell Biology and Developmental Genetics at the Francis Crick Institute, to MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology for their contributions to public engagement with a series of well-received events including a lab-wide open day and a friends-and-family BBQ.
The second Openness award was presented by Val Summers, Manager Regulatory Affairs & Home Office Liaison at Inotiv, to the University of Manchester for hosting a debate titled “Culture of care or culture of concern, let’s debate animal research”.
The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) was highly commended for creating a sector-leading, comprehensive, accessible guide on funding and communicating about research involving
animals.
