Philosopher Mark LeBar argues that given how important equality is to most of us as a social value, it is crucial that we understand how to think of it. What do we mean when we talk about equality? This lecture describes how some very influential proposals go awry.
This talk was given as part of "Modern Challenges to Liberty," an IHS summer seminar held online from July 7-12, 2020.
Mark LeBar is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Florida State University. He was previously a professor at Ohio University. He holds an MBA from Pepperdine University, an MA in philosophy from the University of Washington, and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Arizona. He has published papers on ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind, and his research has also explored the foundations of political obligations and authority in Aristotelian moral theory. He is the author of “The Value of Living Well” (Oxford University Press).
