Working towards this simple low-cost solution to turning your Valve Index controllers into joysticks with comparable accuracy of a mid-cost standalone joystick with one notable exception - the controller never loses its original purpose.

Joysticks are the preferred choice for controlling aircraft, vehicles and yes even my "Eagle" lunar module in the upcoming release of "Ascent: Eagle Has Left The Moon." With VR applications though - interaction is king and this low-cost solution gives you the best of both worlds, not only allowing you to interact with the dozen of virtual switches and dials like those on the LM & upcoming Lunar Rover using the Index controller, but with the quick mounting of the Index controller to its magnetic base with adjustable spring tension ball & joint for 30 degrees of freedom for pitch, roll, and yaw for joystick like precision. Then quickly remove again to continue using the Index as you normally would with no impairment in the Valve Lighthouse tracking sensors.

Demo is made using a modified Steam VR controller SDK demo and Unreal Engine 4.24. The Index 'Stick' will be available in a dev kit in June, with final product to be determined later.
