A couple of years ago an old Doom mod was brought to my attention called "Computer Deathmatch v1.6" by Sal Vinces (The Immortal). Also known as immy-dm or comp-dm. The mod implements computer-controlled "bots" in Vanilla Doom. You can read the original discussion thread here:

Curious as to how it worked, I reverse engineered it and discovered it was merely a Dehacked patch, and the "players" are just modified monsters. Nevertheless, it's a fun mod and the opponents are quite difficult considering how crude they are. I fixed up a few bugs I found in it and released a cleaned up version without copyright-infringing levels as "Computer Deathmatch v2.0"
This video shows me playing against the bots. I'm not very good.
