The Advanced Study Program hosts a summer colloquium exploring subjects that represent new or rapidly developing areas of research. The colloquium brings together lecturers and graduate students to NSF NCAR for two weeks for classroom presentations, instruction, and interaction.

The 2026 colloquium explored the intersection of compound hazards, convergence, and systems engineering. Graduate students learned how to conduct innovative convergence research that uses a systems approach to strengthen resilience against compound hazards. Dr. Colin Raymond provided the first foundational lecture of the colloquium with a detailed overview of compound hazards definitions and typologies, research approaches, and implications.
