This case study highlights the role of community-based bushfire management in facilitating collaborative effort, building trust and sharing responsibility for managing bushfire risk.
Cornish Hill, located in Daylesford, posed a significant concern for both the community and fire agencies due to the high fuel loads and widespread presence of gorse – a fast-regenerating, highly flammable weed. However, there was a lack of clarity about responsibilities, local values and priorities.
Facilitated by the local CBBM facilitator, community members from Friends of Cornish Hill (FoCH) and the Cornish Hill Management Committee worked with CFA, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic), the Daylesford local brigade, and Hepburn Shire Council to find common ground, share knowledge, and determine a way forward. They worked together effectively to share ownership and make decisions collectively to manage the risk.
