If you have just finished building a brand new rig or your daily system suddenly refuses to turn on, do not panic just yet. Before you assume that your motherboard or power supply is dead, there is a very basic power issue that trips up far more people than you might think.

The very first thing you need to verify is that actual electricity is reaching your system. Check the rocker switch on the back of your power supply to ensure it is flipped to the on position rather than off. It sounds obvious, but it is incredibly easy to knock that switch while cable managing or moving the chassis around.

While you are down there, double check the wall socket as well as any extension leads you might be using to power your desktop setup. Making sure the plug is fully seated and the socket switch is turned on takes two seconds and can save you hours of unnecessary troubleshooting.
