As the Indigenous story teller Thomas King once said “Now that you have heard my story… it is yours and you may do whatever you want with it, you may share it, learn from it, or forget it” So please do share it with your mom, your dad or a Muslim.
Also, I purposefully did not respond to the article my friend showed me because I am not ready to examine the complex webs of intersectionalities that are at play here, for the Muslims of Canada are oppressed and they do face racism and xenophobia, but they are also oppressors and have put many LGBTQ2IA+ folks on guard. Maybe one day I will sit down and do the research, but in that video, I will not talk about queer folk, but rather I’d want to extend an arm and talk to them and listen to them. I would like to learn from them, but also have them speak about such an issue because I am not an expert and I do not know everything.
Even as an educator, I will never stop learning and listening.
To the Muslims who are on the fence and simply tolerate those who are in the LGBTQ2IA+ community. Take a leap of faith and build a relation.
From my years of researching, I’ve found it odd how some people in the African American community turned their backs on Muslims after 911 and now it is the Muslims who are now turning their backs on trans folks. I aim to reverse this and I call on all Muslims to face both communities and reach out and help those who are being oppressed.
The Future is not Lost because if we unite, we can create something new and something better.
Thanks for a 1000 subs btw, I still cannot believe it. I am happy to return as an educator of sorts and I have oddly discovered that my teachers heart is still beating. I still have much to teach you all, but I also wish to learn from you.
